What is Embrace Home Housing?

Embrace Home Housing is a supportive housing program serving adults throughout Hampton Roads, Virginia. The program combines affordable housing with supportive services designed to help individuals overcome barriers, maintain housing stability, and work toward greater independence.

Is Embrace Home Housing a room rental company?

No. Embrace Home Housing is not a room rental company. The program was specifically designed for individuals who need both housing and supportive services. Housing and support work together to help participants achieve long-term stability and success.

Is Embrace Home Housing a shelter?

No. Embrace Home Housing is not an emergency shelter, homeless shelter, apartment complex, or government-subsidized housing provider. We offer structured supportive housing in a shared living environment.

 

Who is the program designed for?

The program is designed for adults who may be experiencing housing instability or barriers to traditional housing, including:

  • Poor or limited credit history

  • Prior evictions

  • Criminal backgrounds

  • Limited rental history

  • Fixed or limited income

  • Mental health challenges

  • Physical disabilities

  • Recovery and re-entry needs

  • Transitions from hospitals, treatment programs, homelessness, or unstable living situations

 

What areas do you serve?

Embrace Home Housing serves Hampton Roads, Virginia, including Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, and surrounding communities. We also accept referrals from across Virginia for individuals seeking supportive housing in Hampton Roads.

 

What are the program rates?

Program rates start at $800 per month and are based on the level of supportive services, accommodations, and stabilization support needed for each participant's success.

Unlike traditional rentals, program rates are not based solely on a room assignment. Rates reflect the housing, support, resources, and services necessary to help participants maintain stability and achieve their goals.

 

What is included in the monthly program rate?

Program rates may include:

  • Furnished housing

  • Utilities

  • Internet access

  • Shared household amenities

  • Resident stabilization support

  • Care coordination

  • Resource navigation

  • Community referrals

  • Goal-setting and accountability support

  • Housing retention assistance

 

Why are program rates different for each participant?

Every participant enters the program with different needs. Some individuals require minimal support, while others may need extensive stabilization services, resource coordination, employment support, or assistance navigating community systems. Program rates are based on the level of support necessary to promote long-term success.

 

Do I need income to qualify?

Yes. Participants must have a reliable source of income or verified financial support sufficient to meet their monthly program obligations and personal living expenses.

 

Examples may include:

  • Employment income

  • SSI

  • SSDI

  • VA Benefits

  • Retirement income

  • Pensions

  • Organizational sponsorship or support

 

Do you accept people with poor credit?

Yes. Many participants come to the program with poor credit, no credit history, or financial barriers that make securing traditional housing difficult.

 

Do you accept people with eviction history?

Yes. Prior evictions do not automatically disqualify an applicant. Each application is reviewed individually based on program fit and current circumstances.

 

Do you accept people with criminal backgrounds?

Yes. Criminal history does not automatically prevent acceptance. Applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis while considering participant safety, community living requirements, and program suitability.

 

Do you provide housing for individuals in recovery?

Yes. Embrace Home Housing works with individuals in recovery who are committed to maintaining sobriety and participating in recommended recovery services.

 

Do you provide services for individuals with mental health diagnoses?

Yes. Individuals with mental health diagnoses may be eligible if they are psychiatrically stable, under provider care when appropriate, and able to participate safely in a shared living environment.

 

Do you offer private apartments?

No. Embrace Home Housing operates a 100% shared housing model. Participants share common living spaces as part of a supportive community environment.

Is a security deposit required?

No. Embrace Home Housing does not require a security deposit. A one-time enrollment fee equal to 50% of the participant's monthly program rate is required. The remaining 50% is supported through donations and community support.

What supportive services are available?

Supportive services may include:

  • Housing stabilization support

  • Care coordination

  • Employment and job-readiness support

  • Resource referrals

  • Benefits navigation

  • Community integration support

  • Goal planning

  • Financial literacy education

  • Healthcare resource navigation

  • Recovery support referrals

Will insurance or Medicaid pay for this program?

No. Insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare do not pay for housing costs such as rent or room and board.

While insurance may cover medical care, behavioral health treatment, or certain supportive services, housing itself is not a reimbursable medical expense.
